As a companion resource to this statement, the following is a model motion to pass in unions and organized workplaces in solidarity with the Crockett Ten.
MOTION IN SOLIDARITY WITH THE CROCKETT TEN
Submitted to [LOCAL/BODY NAME] for a vote on [DATE]
WHEREAS ILWU Local 6 members struck C&H Sugar in Crockett, California, beginning June 15, 2026, over wages, sick time, retirement benefits, and the company’s attempt to strip healthcare from current and future retirees; and
WHEREAS on July 21, 2026, Contra Costa Sheriff’s deputies attacked the picket line with batons and tear gas and declared an unlawful assembly, injuring and hospitalizing multiple picketers and, per the accounts of those present, shoving a Black ILWU picketer into a plate-glass window and pinning him to the ground before jailing him and two other Local 10 members overnight; and
WHEREAS ten picketers and supporters, the “Crockett Ten,” were arrested and now face charges including failure to disperse, resisting arrest, and battery; and
WHEREAS these arrests are an attack on the ability of every union and body of organized workers to picket effectively, not just ILWU; and
WHEREAS negotiations between C&H and ILWU Local 6 continue through September 30, 2026, with the strike liable to resume if no agreement is reached, while the charges against the Crockett Ten remain unresolved;
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:
- That [LOCAL/BODY NAME] adopts this motion in solidarity with the Crockett Ten and calls for all charges against them to be dropped.
- That [LOCAL/BODY NAME] circulates this motion and the facts of the C&H dispute to its full membership, and forwards it in solidarity to ILWU Locals 6 and 10 and the ILWU International.
- That [LOCAL/BODY NAME] calls on its members to turn out in support of the Crockett Ten at their upcoming court appearances and at any solidarity rallies called in their support.
- That [LOCAL/BODY NAME] sends this motion to other regional union locals, encouraging them to adopt similar motions and to turn out their own members in solidarity.
- That [LOCAL/BODY NAME] opens discussion, in preparation for September 30, of concrete solidarity action it is prepared to take if the strike resumes, including but not limited to sympathy pickets, informational actions at other worksites, and coordinated public actions with other locals.
- That [LOCAL/BODY NAME] treats this fight as ongoing regardless of the outcome of the charges, recognizing that the ability to picket effectively is a weapon of the whole labor movement and worth defending as such.
