These attacks aim to control and maintain a hyper-exploited section of the working class, composed largely of immigrants. Union leadership tied to the bosses has remained largely silent on these issues and, in some cases, has even fueled these attacks with anti-immigrant rhetoric and positions.

The Democratic Party sheds crocodile tears over the arrests and deportations of immigrant children and their families. Its hypocrisy is clear when we remember that the Obama administration deported more people (2.9 million) than any Republican administration including Trump’s. No matter which of the bosses’ parties administers the capitalist state machine, the working class must defend itself against the capitalist class and the attacks of its state apparatus.

This offensive against immigrants is not new. For example, the racist violence and deportations suffered by Chinese immigrants who labored in mining, railroad construction, and agriculture in the United States during the late 19th century. Today, ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) carries out arrests and disgusting deportations of immigrant workers. Detentions and deportations are accelerating rapidly, with increased funding to expand the State’s capacity to carry them out. Detained immigrants are often forced to live in for-profit prisons run by companies like GEO Group, where detainees are exploited as cheap labor, allowing other capitalists to profit from their detention.

Many union members and leaders, such as Juárez Zeferino, have been targeted. These attacks are intended to spread fear and suppress organizing efforts among the most exploited workers and by extension, the entire working class. Capitalist immigration laws and policing force many workers into undocumented status, creating a hyper-exploited section of the working class living in precarious social and legal conditions, under constant threat of deportation and detention. Many of these people, including children, make up the labor force in sectors such as domestic work, construction, service, and agriculture. This system allows the capitalist class to lower wages and worsen conditions for the entire working class through competition and control over labor supply and demand.

Native-born workers are told by so-called right-wing politicians that immigrant workers are to blame for their hardships; that they “commit crimes” and “drain the system.” In reality, the true parasite is the boss, who extracts profit from workers and commits heinous acts of violence in pursuit of profit. Undocumented immigrant workers pay taxes on their wages to the State that provides them with no services, services that are already minimal for the rest of the working class, since they are excluded from programs like SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program), Medicaid, and Social Security.

Most business union leaders have stayed silent on immigrant workers’ struggles, and some have openly promoted racism, nationalism, and anti-immigrant sentiment. For example, Teamsters President Sean O’Brien recently echoed racist, anti-immigrant rhetoric, claiming that “illegal immigrants come into our country to commit crimes and steal jobs.” These false leaders exist to block the class organization of the workers’ struggle and maintain “social peace” through the lie of common interests between workers and bosses, under the banner of “our” glorious nation, which in reality means the subjugation of workers’ interests to those of capital!

The working class is strongest when united, including across borders!
